Magdalena Abakanowicz

Two Corten Armours

Beach Westende, Koning Ridderdijk, Strandlaan
Middelkerke-Westende

In her impressive sculptures the renowned sculptor Magdalena Abakanowicz regularly questions the condition humaine. Confusion and anonymity are themes that arise time and again in her work; as an analysis of the position of the individual in the mass they show traces of Abakanowicz' life during the communist regime in Poland. During Beaufort04 Abakanowicz is exhibiting Two Corten Armours, two enormous steel skulls in the transition zone between the dunes and the beach in Westende. Skulls have a special significance for the artist, as bearers of instincts and emotions which overpower the intellect. Lying in the sand and rusted by the raw sea wind the two sculptures make us think of the remains of two enormous seagulls.
