Blankenberge
The Portuguese artist Dalila Gonçalves uses historic and decorative elements from the façades of buildings, that she as it were crumples up to throw them away directly as rubbish, superfluous pieces of the construction process. By giving these decorations a new weight, form and volume, she saves a great deal of history. Doing this she questions the frontier between past and present, between memories, remembering and forgetting. In this way in Blankenberge she links the rich history of the Blankenberge ‘faience’ with her own cultural inheritance of the famous Portuguese ‘azulejos’, the typical blue ceramic tiles.
